In recent time of the human age, where the world is becoming a global village through integrated technology of the internet and communication. The foundation of every unit of the society known to be marriage is crashing on a daily basis. Unfortunately, there is limit to what the law of the land says much about this domestic affairs except for union and divorce.
Marriage is crashing on a daily basis due to many unknown and unforseen occurrence between couples in this age and many reasons for this divorce are some things that are not known to the each side of the union before marriage like hereditary behavior, personal behavior, and many other factors that can cause misunderstanding between couples that may leads to divorce and scattered marriage.
In Nigeria, there are over 300 tribes with distinct culture and norms. Part of this culture include the marriage rites, which is the bedrock for a society to thrive and grow well. That is, when a marriage is set right, the society will grow right . Yoruba culture is one of the most popular and respected culture of the black nations which spread to every continent of the world including South America, Europe, North America and more. Part of the testimony of this beautiful culture of the Yorubas is the wedding right which is one of the most glamorous wedding right in the world.
In Yoruba marriage rites, it is a taboo for a relation or family to get married to each other even if they are from the clan or compound as this can be acceptable in other part of the world as it is known or heard. The difference between family background of the Yoruba marriage union makes the wedding a very unique and interesting one as both families are presented through introduction in order to be sure that both families are not related by blood before continuing with payment of bride price and other ceremonies.
But prior to the wedding ceremony and before the groom will propose to the wife, there is an intermediary known as “ALARINA” in Yoruba land who act to do a what could be referred to as a background check on the family to be married to. The Alarina could be a man or a woman from the bride family who is trusted and respected by the groom and his family to do a thorough check on what is needed to be know about a woman who is to be engaged in terms of. Behavior, modesty, and every things that needed to be known before the groom will propose to the bride. Although, the proposal maybe accepted or rejected by the bride and her family.
The Work of the Alarina is so tremendous and help to build a long lasting confidence, trust and happy home. Although, it does not necessarily guaranteed that there won’t be misunderstanding and confusion. Before the arrival of the western culture where Religion leaders are now acting as intermediary and which may not act originally as the person who knows the families to the core for proper check.
In today’s world, couples are not in need of any intermediary to know where there spouse are coming from even if they both court for years, they may not see the whole picture of the families involved untill the wedding day which is really a destitute for a promising union.
In the present age of fake social media and handles, many young people had fallen into the trap of fake marriage through the inability to see the families they are getting into untill the marriage right is completed. It is advisable for young men to take their time to check very well before leaping into the pool of marriage. In today’s world, only blood type has been the major criteria for marriage as many people still fall victims of this simplest act of checking compatibilities before going into marriage.
It is always advisable for intending couples to take their time to know very well about the families they are getting into before marriage as it takes only the grace of God to survive hereditary problem through behavior, Spiritual, intellectually, health wise and many other factors that needed to be known.
